Organizations Win IRS Quality Awards

Sixteen organizations receive IRS Quality Supplier Award for supplying the Internal Revenue Service with large numbers of error-free information documents. This is the second year this award has been given.

The IRS honors these companies for their outstanding achievements in filing error-free information returns during tax years 1990 and 1991. These returns include the Form 1099 series (interest, dividends, miscellaneous income, etc.) and Form W-2 series (wage and tax statements). The correct transmission of this data helps taxpayers file more accurate and timely tax returns. "Our goal is to help taxpayers comply rather than relying solely on after-the-fact enforcement," stated Shirley D. Peterson, Commissioner of Internal Revenue Service.

The award recipients are:

  • Data Management Systems, Inc., Hyannis, MA
  • Travelers Insurance Company, Hartford, CT
  • Long Island Savings Bank, Melville, NY
  • New York State Department of Labor, Albany, NY
  • GTE Shareholders Services, Inc., North Quincy, MA
  • Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA
  • Huntington Service Company, Columbus, OH
  • Illinois Department of Revenue, Springfield, IL
  • Wisconsin Department of Revenue, Madison, WI
  • Chevy Chase Federal Savings Bank, Chevy Chase, MD
  • South Carolina Tax Commission, Columbia, SC
  • Sunbank, Orlando, FL
  • NationsBank, Tampa, FL
  • State of California Franchise Tax Board, Sacramento, CA
  • State of Louisiana Dept. of Tax & Revenue, Baton Rouge, LA
  • Bureau of Public Debt, Parkersburg, WV

Each year some 34,000 transmitters file over 915 million information documents and wage and tax statement forms. The recipients of this year's Quality Supplier Awards each filed over 500,000 documents.

Peterson stated, "This is the second year we have honored our suppliers for the extra time and effort they give to provide quality data to the IRS."

The Quality Supplier Award is just one part of the IRS Information Reporting Program's quality plan. The plan also includes visiting and assisting transmitters with problems; expanding the number of seminars held at the IRS Martinsburg (WV) Computing Center and setting up customer service call sites. Call sites for transmitters are now available in New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Kentucky.
