Donald K. Vogel is the
New IRS Assistant Commissioner
for Criminal Investigation

WASHINGTON - Donald K. Vogel is the new Internal Revenue Service assistant commissioner for criminal investigation.

He is responsible for directing the enforcement of criminal provisions of the tax laws and related financial crimes to encourage voluntary compliance with the Internal Revenue laws. He directs nationwide programs for investigating suspected tax violations and recommending prosecution.

Approximately 3,000 criminal investigation special agents enforce tax and money laundering laws. Top enforcement priorities for criminal investigation are organized crime, illegal tax protester, high-level drug dealers, bank secrecy act and money laundering violations, and false claims against the government.

Voluntary compliance with the tax laws relies heavily on the deterrent effect of successful criminal prosecutions. Criminal investigation's conviction rate is one of the highest in federal law enforcement. During fiscal year 1992, criminal investigation referred 4,045 cases to the Department of Justice for prosecutions, resulting in 2,778 convictions of which 71 percent won prison sentences.

Vogel entered federal service in 1965 with the Department of the Army. In 1971 he joined the IRS as a special agent in the criminal investigation division in Omaha, Neb. Vogel held various positions in criminal investigation including group manager in San Antonio, Texas; branch chief in Austin, Texas; assistant division chief in St. Louis and executive assistant to the assistant regional commissioner in Dallas.

After completing the IRS Executive Selection and Development Program in 1987, he became assistant director of the St. Paul District. In 1988 Vogel was named assistant regional commissioner for criminal investigation for the Midwest Region, the position he held until his present appointment.

Vogel earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with a major in accounting from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. He is a native of Sigourney, Iowa.
