Employers Have Until Feb. 15 to
Give W-2s to Household Employees

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service announced today that employers have until February 15 to furnish household employees with W-2 Forms showing wages paid and employment taxes withheld. The extension of time is a result of a late mailing of Package H, the forms and instruction booklets sent yearly to those who filed tax returns as household employers the year before.

“We regret any inconvenience this late mailing causes for employers or their household employees,” said IRS Commissioner Charles O. Rossotti.

Normally, employers are required to provide these statements to their employees by January 31. However, the 248,000 packages were mailed late.

Some taxpayers have already received Package H. The printer contracted by the IRS shipped the packages to the Postal Service on January 25.

Employers must still file Forms W-2 and W-3 with the Social Security Administration by February 28. Although most tax forms can be printed directly from the IRS Web site – www.irs.gov – Forms W-2 and W-3 are exceptions, requiring special paper and inks to make them machine readable. The forms are available at IRS offices.
